The History and Mission of Rotary International
Rotary International was founded on February 23, 1905, by Paul Harris, a Chicago attorney who sought to create a professional networking club that also served the community. The first Rotary club was established in Chicago, with members rotating meetings among their offices—hence the name “Rotary.”
By 1921, Rotary had expanded beyond the United States, becoming an international organization. Today, Rotary International operates in over 200 countries and territories, boasting more than 1.4 million members across 46,000 clubs worldwide.
Purpose and Mission
Rotary’s mission is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through fellowship and humanitarian efforts. The organization’s core values include service, fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership.
