Discover Pass Price Increase – up $15 annually

If you enjoy exploring Washington’s scenic parks, hiking trails, waterfront access points, and recreation lands, there is an important change now in effect that may impact your next adventure. The annual Washington Discover Pass officially increased in price from $30 to $45 beginning October 1, 2025—a 50% increase and the first price adjustment since the pass was introduced in 2011.
For many residents around Lakewood and Pierce County who regularly visit state parks, fishing areas, trail systems, and recreation sites throughout Washington, the Discover Pass has long been considered one of the more affordable annual outdoor investments. Even with the increase, officials say the additional funding will help maintain the lands and facilities people depend on every year.
Updated Discover Pass Pricing
Current pricing now includes:
- Annual Discover Pass: $45
- One-Day Discover Pass: $10
The pass grants vehicle access to lands managed by three major state agencies:
- Washington State Parks
- Department of Fish & Wildlife
- Department of Natural Resources
Together, these agencies oversee a large network of public recreation spaces, including state parks, recreation sites, water access locations, wildlife areas, and natural conservation lands across Washington.

One Pass Can Cover Two Vehicles
For households with multiple vehicles, there is some flexibility built into the program. One Discover Pass may be assigned to two vehicles, although it can only be used by one vehicle at a time.
That feature continues to make the pass attractive for couples, families, and outdoor enthusiasts who alternate between vehicles.
Why the Price Went Up
According to state officials, the increase is intended to help support ongoing park operations and maintenance costs. Revenue generated from Discover Pass sales helps fund important services that often go unnoticed but make a significant difference for visitors, including:
- Trail maintenance
- Restroom cleaning and upkeep
- Staffing and park operations
- Recreation site preservation
- Conservation and land management efforts
As operating costs continue to rise, state agencies say the additional funding will help ensure Washington’s outdoor spaces remain clean, accessible, and enjoyable for future generations.
For visitors who regularly enjoy parks and recreation areas throughout the South Sound and beyond, the increase represents a higher cost at the gate, but potentially cleaner and better-maintained public spaces in return.
Planning Outdoor Adventures Around Lakewood
Residents in the Lakewood area often use the Discover Pass for day trips to state-managed lands throughout Pierce County and nearby destinations across Washington. As outdoor recreation continues to grow in popularity, officials hope the additional funding will help preserve trails, facilities, and recreation opportunities for years to come.
Whether you’re planning a weekend hike, a family camping trip, or simply a relaxing day outdoors, anyone heading to Washington state recreation lands may want to double-check they have an updated Discover Pass before hitting the road.
