The City of
Lakewood, WA.
The City of Lakewood, Washington, is located in Pierce County and has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. The area was originally home to the Nisqually and Steilacoom Tribes, who lived along the region’s lakes and prairies.
A rich history, dating back to the mid-19th century
European settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, drawn by the area’s natural resources and its proximity to Fort Steilacoom, a military post established in 1849.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the region became known for its agriculture, timber, and railroad expansion. The Tacoma Country & Golf Club, one of the oldest golf courses west of the Mississippi, was established in 1894. By the mid-20th century, the area had grown into a suburban community, particularly influenced by the presence of Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), a major military installation.
Despite its development, Lakewood remained an unincorporated area until it officially became a city on February 28, 1996. Since then, it has grown into a vibrant community known for its parks, lakes, and diverse population. Today, Lakewood is home to over 60,000 residents and continues to be a key economic and cultural hub in the South Sound region.
The City of Lakewood’s rich history and vibrant community are now showcased through SEE Lakewood, a magazine-style website sponsored by the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce and supported by tourism tax dollars from the City of Lakewood. This initiative highlights the city’s attractions, accommodations, dining, and seasonal activities, providing both residents and visitors with insights into all that Lakewood has to offer.
