A Legacy of Elegance and Architecture
Nestled on the shores of American Lake in Lakewood, Washington, Thornewood Castle stands as one of the most remarkable historical estates in the Pacific Northwest. This grand estate, often referred to as “the house that love built,” has a rich past that dates back more than a century.
Chester Thorne, a prominent banker and one of the founders of the Port of Tacoma, commissioned the construction of the castle in the early 20th century. Thorne was inspired by the grandeur of European castles and sought to create a home that would capture the Old World elegance and craftsmanship. To achieve this, he purchased a 400-year-old English Tudor Gothic manor from England, had it meticulously dismantled, and transported its bricks, woodwork, and stained glass windows across the Atlantic to be reassembled in Lakewood. The castle was completed in 1911, boasting 27,000 square feet, extensive gardens, and breathtaking views of the lake.
A Hollywood and Historical Icon
Over the years, Thornewood Castle has played host to distinguished guests, including presidents and dignitaries. The castle has also gained fame in popular culture, serving as the filming location for Stephen King’s miniseries Rose Red (2002) and the film The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer (2003). Its rich history and romantic ambiance have made it a sought-after location for storytelling and artistic inspiration.
